Secure Your Child’s Future: The Whole Person Paradigms

The only certain thing about the future is that it is uncertain!

While we have strong faith in God, we also want to do our part, by trying to secure whatever is within our capability and capacity to do so.

How do you secure your child’s future? Come, let’s share ideas and best practices!

For the purpose of our discussion, let’s use the whole person paradigm – mind, body, heart, spirit – so we cover all bases.

Let’s start, shall we?

Foremost, the whole person (or you might also see whole child) paradigm asserts that for us to truly help develop a child or an individual, we need to see and develop him/her in all these four aspects. Mind = IQ, soul, Body = physical health and wellbeing, Heart = EQ and Spirit = values.

The Whole Person Paradigm Model

I believe that the best way to secure the future is to start doing something now. “Now” could be the present time as you read.

Parents should teach age appropriate lessons as early as possible. For example, children as young as 2 or 3 years old should be encouraged to pursue creativity – use of their imagination through story telling and pretend play. A five year old should then learn the ABCs and 123s (even earlier for some) but a two year old should not be forced to sit to memorize the alphabet as this may hinder the development of his/her creativity and eye-muscle coordination. Though, development is different for each one. The important part is we set a strong intellectual foundation for them.

A child spends 12 years in school and 4 years in university. Add more years for courses like Engineering, Medicine and Law, to name a few. That’s an awful long time and something that is going to happen for sure, unless there is a radical change in our education system (I am hopeful but realistically, unlikely). So, might as well prepare for it – research schools and choose that which is right for them.

On the financial aspect, it is better to have something to draw from for our child’s education instead of only relying on savings, salary and bonuses around the time of enrolment period, especially in their college years. You might be resisting and thinking CAP. We now have an option to veer away from plans and products that are dedicated for an exclusive purpose.

There are several options now. In fact, ‘shopping’ for the right financial product is now very complex with the several possibilities to choose from. But let me share with you an example. This is what I got for both myself and my 3-year old daughter. Of course her yearly premium is 10K lesser than mine due to age of enrolment. I enrolled myself at 33yo and my daughter at 1yo. The rule is, the younger at the age of enrolment, the smaller the premium. I for my daughter’s on a quarterly basis which I find easier on the budget. You can elect you own mode of payment.

This is the name of the plan – Sun MaxiLink Prime. What works for me is that I can withdraw cash from a portion of the fund raised when needed and can use some for my daughter’s college education later when it matures (or in my case when I retire). 🙂

Note: This is not a sponsored post.

There are many other VULs and mutual funds to choose from. In case you have questions on financial products or investments, please reach out to The Smart Peso who has the tools and expertise to respond to your queries.

Health is wealth is as old as it is true. Which is why this is something that should be of prime importance when it comes to parenting.

Establishing healthy eating habits, introducing to healthy food – think crops and veggies, and engaging in physical activities are all very important activities to start doing now.

As a security measure for what may happen in the future on the aspect of physical health, there is Cordlife.

Basically, they collect your baby’s stem cells – from cord blood or cord lining – and keep them in a blood bank facility. This happens on the day you give birth, of course.

How are stem cells used?

Stem Cell Transplantation

This is done to reconstitute a patient’s blood and immune system, following treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, which destroys blood cells. The stem cells are infused directly into the patient’s bloodstream, which migrate to the bone marrow. Inside the bone marrow environment, the stem cells begin differentiating into the three blood cell types – red blood, white blood and platelets. This initiates the regeneration of the patient’s blood and immune system.

The first cord blood transplant was performed in 1988 in France, which successfully treated a 5-year old boy with Fanconi’s Anaemia. To date there have been more than 40,000 cord blood stem cell transplants reported worldwide. – Cordlife Philippines

This is one of those things you availed but prayed you never had to use, you know. Well, at least they have several freebies – we got a nice crib and a Fisher Price bath tub when we availed, and they recently launched a Privilege Card and from time to time they have redeemable perks such as discounts and free vouchers.

Should you be interested in cord blood or cord lining banking, please send me an email and an expert from Cordlife Philippines will get in touch with you.

Disclosure: I will get a reward in the form of shopping points from Cordlife for every successful referral.

In the past only IQ was of great importance. Today, EQ becomes more and more important. Even in the workplace, the criteria for hiring is shifting, especially in leadership roles, to IQ and EQ at equal (if not EQ at higher) importance.

In their recent policy statement, the American Academy of Pediatrics advised parents not to use technology as a way to calm or pacify negative emotions in their child. Specifically, they expressed “concern that using media as strategy to calm could lead to problems with limit setting or the inability of children to develop their own emotion regulation.”

Basically, children need the experience of feeling these emotions and practice tolerating them to develop self-control and emotional intelligence.

From The Gottman Institute

These are practices we can start doing now to help them stabilize on the emotional plane, which they will certainly find useful in the future.

If we are to choose one, only one area to develop, I would choose this one. All areas are important of course, but I am a firm believer that if everyone subscribes to, holds on to and acts based on positive values, the world will be a so much better place.

I also believe that children should be taught values as early as possible as these will form their core. Something that they will carry with them as they grow up, travel places and meet new people.

The below articles talked more extensively about values. When you do get the time, please visit them, too.

I believe kids should be taught about God and the concepts of faith and prayers as soon as able to grasp abstract concepts. Before this, Kiddie Bible Stories and short prayers can be introduced.
